Each year, Women in Construction Week® recognizes the growing impact women have across the construction industry. At all levels, and across many sectors, women play an important role in the workforce. We’re proud to recognize a few of many women at Evers & Sons whose work contributes to the success of our operations each and every day.
Saida Guerra — Safety Coach
Saida Guerra has been with Evers & Sons for nearly two years and serves as a Safety Coach, supporting crews in the field by reinforcing safe work practices and helping teams understand the importance of safety culture.
While some people assume safety roles focus on identifying mistakes, Saida explains that her role is much more focused on guidance and support.
“People think as a Safety Coach our job is to catch employees doing something wrong, but the real role is to guide and support employees so they can understand why safety practices matter and how to work safely.”
For Saida, safety culture is deeply personal.
“Safety culture is personal for me because every employee has family, friends, or loved ones waiting for them at home. Every decision on the jobsite impacts real lives outside of work.”
Jennifer Garza — Safety Area Manager (Safety Coach of the Year, 2024)
Jennifer has been with Evers & Sons for 2½ years, serving as a Safety Area Manager in West Texas, helping lead proactive safety planning across projects.
Her role involves reviewing production schedules, identifying upcoming work activities, and coordinating safety coverage to ensure crews are prepared for both routine and high-risk tasks. Jennifer also works closely with operations and clients to ensure all required safety planning is in place before work begins, including safety documentation, traffic control plans, emergency action plans, and site-specific safety planning.
She also serves as a key resource for safety coaches in the field, helping guide teams through complex situations and ensuring safety decisions remain aligned with both operational needs and company standards.
For Jennifer, safety culture starts with protecting people.
“To me, ‘safety first’ means protecting people is always the top priority. No operational goal or deadline outweighs the well-being of the team. It’s about creating a culture where everyone feels empowered to speak up, identify hazards, and follow safe work practices so everyone goes home at the end of the day as healthy as when they arrived.”
Mariah Zuniga — Material Handler (Procurement Employee of the Year, 2024)
Mariah Zuniga serves as a Material Handler, helping ensure crews have the materials and coordination needed to perform their work in the field. While she previously worked with Evers & Sons earlier in her career, she has been back with the company for four consecutive years.
Mariah’s role focuses heavily on preparation and coordination, supporting the field by making sure materials arrive where they need to be, when they need to be there.
She also emphasizes that much of the work behind successful projects happens long before crews arrive on site.
“People don’t realize how much invisible planning goes into making something ‘simple’ appear on time or as fast as they need it. It can take just one small delay to create a ripple that impacts the entire job. The crews can’t do their job unless we’ve done ours.”
For women interested in working in construction, Mariah encourages confidence and determination.
“Work hard, show your worth, and it will always pay off in the end. Learn as much as you can and don’t be afraid to ask questions.”
Across every role from safety leadership to field logistics and jobsite support, the women on our team play an important part in helping projects move forward safely and successfully.
